Herefordshire is blessed with an extraordinary collection of historic churches, with some especially interesting examples tucked in the rugged countryside near the Welsh border. Perhaps the most famous church in the county is not the glorious edifice of Hereford Cathedral, but the quiet little Norman church at Kilpeck, with its marvellous collection of carved faces decorating both the interior and exterior.
The church of St Dubricius at Hentland dates to the middle of the 11th century, though the bulk of the current building dates to the 13th and 14th centuries. It is entirely possible that there was a church here well before the Norman conquest; indeed, the name of the village comes from the Welsh words for 'old church'.

Hereford was founded in Saxon times to house the shrine of Saint Ethelbert, a murdered king of East Anglia. A carefully preserved tooth of the saint was highly venerated in the Middle Ages. The church underwent several stages of rebuilding, most notably in the 13th century, when the north transept was built. Look at the triforium arches; they are triangular, almost straight-sided, an unusual effect known as the Geometric style. Hereford gained its second major shrine when miracles were reported at the tomb of Bishop Thomas de Cantilupe, who died in 1282.

The twisted spire of All Saints church dominates the Hereford skyline. The church dates to the 13th century and boasts a set of amusing 14th-century misericords, a Queen Anne reredos, and a pulpit and sounding board made in 1621. The church interior does double-duty as a cafe and community centre.

A fascinating Victorian chapel in rich Italianate style. Hoarwithy is technically a chapelry under nearby Hentland church. The man responsible for building the first chapel at Hoarwithy, Rev Thomas Hutchinson, was curate of Hentland parish in 1840. His fairly simple chapel was a small brick structure that had few redeeming architectural qualities.

The Norman church of St Mary and St David in the Herefordshire village of Kilpeck is quite a simple building, consisting only of a rectangular nave and an unusual rounded apse. But visitors do not come to Kilpeck for the layout, but for the extraordinary collection of Norman carvings that decorate the church.
