Herefordshire is blessed with an extraordinary collection of historic churches, with some especially interesting examples tucked in the rugged countryside near the Welsh border. Perhaps the most famous church in the county is not the glorious edifice of Hereford Cathedral, but the quiet little Norman church at Kilpeck, with its marvellous collection of carved faces decorating both the interior and exterior.
St Bartholomew's is a very striking country church composed of a squat and stolid west tower and a nave, chancel, and south aisle. The oldest part of the church is the tower, which dates to the Norman period - probably 12th century. This is a very low structure topped with a pyramidal roof.

St James is a Grade I listed building, located beside Wigmore Castle in this attractive north Herefordshire village. The church is built on the site of an earlier Saxon building. One unusual feature is a piscina located high on the wall. This oddity is explained when you realize that the piscina was constructed to serve an altar in the medieval rood loft, which no longer exists.
