This is a gem of a cottage in a lovely Scottish village with all the local amenities you could wish for. There are beautiful walks from the door step and the village is a good base if you are wanting to explore further afield. The cottage itself is well equipt, cosy and warm. The log burner in the dining end of the kitchen provides a welcoming feel and the lounge is spacious and airy if you are holidaying as a larger family group. Large comfy beds and wonderful views from all the windows. Our only complaint would be the lack of attention to detail by the cleaner...on arrival we found frozen peas left in the freezer by a previous holiday maker and the filter coffee machine was full of used coffee grinds and a soggy filter paper. There were no firelighters or newspapers to light the log burner and the gas igniter clicker was empty so we couldn't light the fire until the next day when we went to the shop to buy matches and firelighters. There is a first aid kit in the kitchen which contains only a few wet wipes and a survival blanket. My advice would be to take your own first aid kit just in case. Also a couple of light bulbs need replacing and we couldn't find any spares. All in all a lovely cottage just needs a bit of extra care taking to make it perfect in every way.
I booked this cottage in July 2015 to visit this year for my 50th birthday. Disappointed is an understatement. It was dirty, unkempt gardens, not child or pet friendly. The photos speak for themselves really. Tried to be reasonable with the owners and Sykes cottages but all we got for our trouble was are fund for £104. What I should have done was to take to small claims but as I have been unwell not possible at present. I should have sent them a cleaning bill.. The garden unkempt grass needing cut, met with weeds on the path, the Windows well as long as you didn't want to see in or out they were filthy with flies on the inside stuck to the glass.. The beds in third bedroom weren't made up and what looked liked a urine stain on the mattress protector was apparently a coffee stain.. the bathroom needs updated in fact if you go into bathroom for a shower mind flick the switch outside first as the shower button does not work!! The dirt in the kitchen cupboards, the empty skittles packets and the empty bottle of robinsons juice bottle in bottom bedroom.... The dog from the neighbours garden nipped my little westie on the nose as the fence has an opening.. The cover from the electric meter fell off wall luckily no one was hurt!! Lastly the cobwebs and dirt on the skirtings and the walls.. Yuk yuk yuk!! IT NEEDS A GOOD CLEAN.. The cleaner though has now resigned!! I still had a lovely holiday with my family after we cleaned it.. BUT WE WONT BE BACK, NOR BOOK WITH SYKES EVER AGAIN.. The village is gorgeous the pubs and the clock house restaurant are brill that made our holiday!!!
Friendly Feel Cottage
We stayed in this bonny wee cottage for a week and had a lovely time. We found the cottage clean and everything supplied in the kitchen that you need. The downstairs bathroom looks a bit tired but the cottage itself more than made up for it with its lovely charm and comfortable seats. The village is very dog friendly and we found at least 3 eating places in the Square that welcomed dogs. We were reluctant to leave and would defintely recommend this holiday rental.
The location and views from Avondale Cottage were exceptional, in a peaceful and quiet location.
The owners was extremely helpful and attentive.
A lovely cottage in a great location. The cottage had everything that we needed for a comfortable stay and it was finished to a good standard. More importantly, it was homely and very dog friendly. Looking forward to a return visit!
