Perfect location - property needs some attention
Perfect location with numerous walks without the need of a car. A very pretty village with small shop, tea shops, pub and restaurant. A short walk to Stoney Middleton and you'll find a good fish and chip shop.
The property is over two floors and approached by a flight of stairs leading to the first floor entrance.
The property was very comfortable and warm. However, there were several issues that hadn't been resolved of which the owner was aware of. The front door lock was difficult to manage. Several lighting bulbs were blown some of which were essential for safety. We couldn't see in the cooking area due to overhead ceiling light not working and the cooker hood didn't have a working light. The bathrooms also had missing lights.
Despite Covid 19 and being asked to delay arrival to allow for 'extra cleaning, this was clearly not done. Dirty cutlery, greasy plates and pans. No dishwasher tablets which is probably why things were not washed properly. Fortunately I always take such items with me and was able to clean what we needed to use. This is the first Sykes cottage where we have had to provide our own dishwasher tablets! I couldn't bring myself to use the oven as it was so dirty.
Dishwashing brush should have been thrown away. Food decrement in the cutlery tray.
The family bathroom had a metal basket sat in the corner of the bath which was rusty and caked in soap scum. The rust stains had not been wiped away from the bath which I was able to do with little effort. Clearly the cleaning agency were not paying attention to obvious cleaning needs. Again this item needed disposing of.
We did contact the owner to bring the front door and lack of lighting to her attention and mentioned the lack of cleanliness. She responded very promptly but was dismissive and blamed the lack of cleanliness onto previous guests. No apology was given.
Understandably, we were very concerned about using unclean utensils, crockery and cutlery especially during the pandemic. The only clear evidence of Covid secure cleaning was the TV remote control set!
I would highly recommend the area for keen walkers as this is a perfect setting off point. The cottage would be very good if these matters were addressed but I would want outdoor space in better weather.

Convenient and comfortable
We stayed at Jay's Nest for a weekend (Friday - Sunday). It was really comfortable and had everything we needed (aside from the usual consumables). The towels and bed linen were clean and soft. It was easy to follow the instructions to get access.
There was a pub a short (3-4 minutes) walk away which is handy if you arrive later in the day and need a bite to eat (we didn't eat there but went there for a drink and it was very welcoming). I'd definitely return to Jay's Nest again for a visit to the Peak District.

almost perfect
This is a nice warm and very very clean . Lots of nice fluffy towels and really well equipped with full size fridge freezer dishwasher (which we did not use) and washing machine. Good quality pans ect .No welcome pack but teabags coffee and a pint of milk was helpful. Also more teatowels would be good for people like us who ate main meals out so was not worth putting dishwasher on. We did have a problem with apartment door lock, which a kindly niebour helped us with, and have made owner aware so think this will not be a issue in future.
