Devon Self Catering cottage, Oak Tree, Halwell, sleeps 4

Needed a good clean. Damaged items in every room.
Extremely disappointing. The cottage is beautiful in a stunning location. However, it needed a thorough clean. The kitchen had not been cleaned for some time! There were numerous broken/missing items in every room, and the plumbing desperately needs an overall. My teenage daughter could not turn on several of the taps! The sink in the bathroom could not be used for some time after the bath was run or the toilet flushed. In every room there were either missing/broken lights, or bedroom door knobs hanging off so my children were unable to close their bedroom doors. Similarly, the shower room door locks didn't line up properly so my children were unable to use them . The most worrying issue was a health and safety aspect of the location of the upstairs smoke alarm, which was positioned so high up in the rafters that it was impossible to test. Also most of the upstairs windows were extremely tight and therefore impossible to open. What if there was a fire in the night, how would we exit the property? There were many other problems too numerous to put in this review. We booked through Helpful holidays and we have had many wonderful problem free holidays with them in the past. However, they have now merged with Sykes cottages, and I couldn't believe their negative hostile attitude when I tried to make a complaint. I am so disappointed that I will be unable to use Helpful holidays in future.
