The Great Hospital was founded by Bishop Walter de Suffield in 1249 as a home for aged and ill clergy, and to offer food and warmth to the poor. Suppressed by Henry VIII at the Reformation, it was re-founded by his son, Edward VI, and granted to the city of Norwich. The hospital stands around a small monastic cloister, with the 13th-century church of St Helen at one side.
