It is hard to imagine a more refined and quietly elegant location than that occupied by Spencer House, tucked away at the end of St James Place. The house, almost a small palace, was built by John, first Earl Spencer, in 1756-66. Spencer, ancestor of Diana, Princess of Wales, created a neo-classical house that was one of the pioneers of that style.
