In a stunning cliff-top location on the Mull of Oa stands a memorial to American dead lost in two separate maritime disasters in 1918. The memorial, erected by the American Red Cross, commemorates those lost in the sinking of the troopships Tuscania and Otranto. Over 650 men were lost in the twin tragedies.

A charcoal-fired ironworks founded in 1753 in a spectacular setting at the head of Loch Etive. Bonawe used charcoal from the nearby woodland to produce pig iron, and the original furnace works are remarkably complete.

A beautifully carved cross dating to around 1380 stands near Campbeltown's quay. The cross is carved with traditional Celtic interlace patterns and decorated with figures of saints, animals, a sea monster, and a mermaid. It probably was moved here from Kilkavan in the 17th century.

An Islay icon, the striking square lighthouse on the headland of Carraig Fhada guards the western approach to Port Ellen harbour. The lighthouse was built in 1832 by Walter Campbell, the Laird of Islay, in memory of his wife Ellenor, who died that year at the age of 36.

This 1921 monument, also known as the Burns Monument, marks the spot where poet Robert Burns parted from 'Highland Mary' Campbell in 1786. Burns wrote several poems about Campbell and may have intended to elope with her to Jamaica before she tragically died, possibly from typhus.

Built between 1897 and 1900, this striking tower is a fanciful copy of the Colosseum in Rome. McCaig's Tower is perched on a hill overlooking Oban, and a public garden is located inside the hollow shell. Steep steps climb to the top of the hill.

If you take the minor road off the B8024 at Achahoish, following the northern shore of Loch Caolisport, after 4 miles or so you will come to a signposted trail to St Columba's Cave. Follow the short path past the somewhat overgrown ruins of a small 13th-century chapel and you will come to a natural cave beneath an upturned rock face.
