Bron y Foel Isaf is a badly damaged portal dolmen in a superbly scenic location just a few miles from Dyffryn Ardudwy. The large capstone has slipped from its perch and a stone wall has been built directly through the dolmen.
Three stones of the tomb remain; a sidestone, a backstone, and the large capstone. The burial chamber was built in the 4th-3rd millennium BC. On the western side of the wall you can see traces of the cairn that originally covered the chamber. To the east is a curved stone wall that may have been part of a forecourt area in front of the cairn.
The impressive capstone measures 2.7m by 2.1m (roughly 8 feet by 6.5 feet). The collapsed cairn is estimated at 21m by 12m (roughly 65 feet by 38 feet), and is on an east-west axis.
The area is rich in ancient sites, with the Neolithic burial chamber of Dyffryn Ardudwy close by, and another at Cors-y-Gedol.
Getting There:
From Dyffryn Ardudwy head north on the A496, then right on a minor road toward Caerffynnon. Turn right at a crossroads into a lane towards Bron y Foel. You will have to open and close farm gates as you proceed. Just before the farm, turn right and the tomb is set into the stone wall by the roadside.
