The 14th-century mystic Julian of Norwich was an anchoress here, in a small cell linked to the church sanctuary. The cell was pulled down at the Reformation but was rebuilt along with the rest of the church after a WWII bombing, re-using the original materials.

An attractive 14th-century church with a later Perpendicular tower and a two-storey porch, St Mary's is composed of a chancel and nave with substantial aisles on either side. The aisle buttresses join the tower high on its lower storey, giving the west end of the church a sense of enormous width, like a medieval barn.

The most obvious feature of St Peter and St Paul church is the 15th-century tower, which is topped by a lovely spire made of wood covered by lead. The interior is spacious and airy, a testament to the large Perpendicular windows and high clerestory.
