St Peter's Church is one of the oldest buildings in South Yorkshire, founded in the early 8th century. An even older preaching cross stands n the churchyard and a Romano-British carving is set into the porch wall. A beautifully-carved nave capital may have come from a nearby Roman villa.

The tiny church of St Mary in Cowlam stands in a farmyard, far from what is left of its former village. The village itself was depopulated gradually over the centuries until all that is left today is a few farms and clustered houses at the nearby Cowlam Grange crossroads.

Built sometime around 1456 for Sir Bryan Roucliffe, the Perpendicular church of St Michael, Cowthorpe, has remained largely unaltered since the 15th century despite a sensitive Victorian restoration. The most immediately striking feature of St Michael's is the tall embattled tower, which looks more like a castle fortification than a religious symbol. The style of the tower is reminiscent of military gatehouse construction in the 15th century.

St Michael's Church is an excellent example of a Perpendicular Gothic building, erected in one go between 1420 and 1430 and very little altered since. Novelist Laurence Sterne was vicar here from 1760-1768 and is buried in the churchyard. The chancel features ornate memorials to the Belasyse family of Newburgh Priory.

I think the word 'idyllic' was invented for Crambe, Yorkshire. The little village is tucked away on a hidden slope above the River Derwent, not far from the historic ruins of Kirkham Priory. The parish church of St Michael's is a very simple building dating to the 11th century with a 13th-century extension and a lovely 15th-century west tower.
