This memorial to playwright William Shakespeare stands in the south aisle of the nave. The memorial is not original, but of 20th century origin. It commemorates Shakespeare's strong connection with the Southwark area; it is only a short walk from the cathedral steps to the site of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, where so many of his plays were originally staged.
