The London Monument was built by Sir Christopher Wren to mark the terrible Great Fire of London in 1666. The column was originally going to be topped by a statue of King Charles II, but that astute monarch decided that he did not want people to associate him with the disaster, so Wren changed his plans and topped the column with a golden urn, from which flames emerge.
