On this site in the shadow of St Pauls Cathedral stood the livery hall of the Cordwainer's Company, one of the powerful medieval London guilds. The first hall was built in 1440, and the final hall - the sixth on this site - was destroyed by bombing in 1941. The site was then remade into a lovely garden with water features.
