In 1954 workmen clearing a site on Wallbrook discovered the remains of a 3rd century Roman temple to the god Mithras. The cult of Mithras was extremely popular among Roman army officers, and artefacts associated with Mithras were discovered in the remains of the temple. The remains were disassembled, then rebuilt at Temple Court, Queen Victoria Street. The site is also known as the London Mithraeum.
