The Whitechapel Art Gallery was founded in 1901 by Charles Harrison Townsend. The gallery is known for several 'firsts', including the first (and only) British exhibition of Picasso's 'Guernica', and exhibitions of the work of Jackson Pollock, David Hockney, and other emerging artists.
