London photo, Christ Church Spitalfields

Almost across the road from Spitalfields Market stands one of Nicholas Hawksmoor's finest London churches. Christ Church was begun in 1714 and finished in 1729. At that time it was located just barely outside the city of London. Hawksmoor was a pupil of Sir Christopher Wren, but although his churches certainly bear testament to Wren's designs, Hawksmoor evolved his own style, rather more solid than the delicacy one associates with Wren.
