Spitalfield Market was on this site in Whitechapel since 1682 when Charles II founded a public market for fruit and vegetables in open fields just outside the walls of the city of London. The current covered market buildings were built in 1887. The original fruit and vegetable market was moved to a new site in the suburb of Leyton in 1991, at which time the original market became known as Old Spitalfields Market.
