This plaque on Liverpool Street marks the location of the first Bethlehem Hospital, which stood here between 1247-1676. The hospital was famous as the place where the mentally ill were sent. Visitors would visit Bethlehem to gawk at the inmates. The hospital was later moved to Finsbury Circus.
