When Shakespeare's Globe Theatre was built in Southwark there was already a well-established theatre nearby. That was The Rose, whose success made the Globe project seem like a good idea to Shakespeare and his fellow shareholders in the venture. The original Rose Theatre has been partly excavated, and can be visited. Guided tours can be taked from the New Globe Theatre to see the Rose foundations.
