Scalasaig Standing Stones

Scalsaig Standing Stones, Colonsay

A pair of standing stones, located just off the Scalasaig to Milbuie track. The stones are 10 yards apart. The largest is 3'3" in height, while the smaller of the pair stands only two feet high.

The long axis of the stones appears to be aligned east to west. It was once believed the stones were part of a stone circle, though there appears to be no evidence to support this theory. Indeed, a recent (1984) survey concluded that the smaller of the stones may be a natural feature and not erected by humans.

To reach the stones, take the track opposite the Colonsay Hotel in Scalasaig, on the south side of the B8086. The track climbs a small rise, then turns right to parallel the road for a few metres before turning south towards Milbuie. You will see the larger of the stones immediately to the right of the track after roughly 400 metres.
