Knowlton, St Clement's Church
History, tourist information, and nearby accommodation
HERITAGE RATING:
Knowlton, St Clement's Church
A small medieval church in the grounds of Knowlton Court manor house. The church is medieval, but the exterior is decidedly Victorian. The church was heavily restored in 1855 by William White.
The interior features several outstanding memorials including one grandiose tomb by Grinling Gibbons to the sons-in-law of Admiral Sir Cloudsley Shovel.
Other memorials include those to members of the Narborough, Speed, and Peyton families. The richly decorated interior boasts stained glass by Victorian craftsmen Lavors, Barrand and Westlake.
St Clements is no longer used for regular worship and is in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.
NB. Don't confuse St Clements with the similarly named historic church of St Clements at Knowlton in Dorset.
