Road noise beyond acceptable for a relaxing break .
Located 20 m from a busy main road where vehicles can reach motorway speeds . Concerned for safety of my dog in case it got out . Lakes Holiday Cottages manage the cottage and make no mention of the road noise issue . When i contacted them to discuss the office manager (Sarah) was off rude and unprofessional . She suggested i should have looked at a map to check the location . My company will never use Lakes Holiday cottages again.

Cosy well presented cottage
Not too far from the M6 turn off the cottage was ideally positioned after a 4.5 hour drive, and great for when we needed to leave. Easy to find and with a great really dog friendly pub, The Windmill, a walk away. The cottage was clean and well presented. The kitchen provided everything we needed (apart from a bread knife) and the appliances were all easy to use. I would recommend a trip to Booths for stocking up the fridge located just as you enter into Windermere. The log burner in the living was such a treat and kicked out amazing heat, our little doggie loved lying in front of it after a day out walking and pub lunching. We would definitely return to Gilpins and hope to next year.

Centrally located freezing cold cottage, on an exceptionally busy main road
This cottage is not a bad base, would be better on a hot summer than the winter if you can cope with the traffic noise which did sound like we were based next to the runway at Heathrow. We had selected it because it permitted dogs, and for that part it was great to get to different parts of the lake district. There were several items in the well stocked kitchen which needed washing before they could be used but on the whole the place was clean. The hot water for the shower and the bath was good and there was a good pressure in the system so it was warming. The massive disappointment though was how cold the place was. The main living room has a black slate floor and no radiators but it does have in it a large wood burner, which we were told logs would be provided for - as per the picture. Their idea of providing logs was a small net bag of logs with fire lighters which lasted less than 20 mins and didn't even warm up the log burner never mind touch the winter cold of the room. With the only heat in the down stairs coming from 2 small radiators (one in the hall and the other at the far end of the kitchen), it was necessary to buy coal and logs to make the place habitable. If you plan to rent this cottage then do factor in the additional £100+ which was required to do this. Also with hiring this cottage over the Christmas period there was no-one who could respond to problems or queries as people responsible for the cottage were not available. On the plus side, the pub down the road was warm, with good food and pet friendly.

nice location lovely cottage
we have just returned from our short break and was very happy with our stay at the gilpins. it is in a good locations, not far from windermere. we especially loved staveley and windermere. the cottage itself was ideal for the two of us but would not be big enough to accomadate more people. only setbacks for us was the noisy main road and the water was far too hot when we had a shower and was unable to turn the temperature down. we found the stairs a little dodgy as the stairs wind round slightly at the top and you have to be very careful with your footing. overall we were very pleased and would recommend to family and friends to stay here.

In clean
We arrived at this cottage to find it dark cold and unclean, we reported to lakes cottages and they had to send a cleaner we waited around for approx an hour for him to clean appliances and vac a very covered in dog hair settee. There are some things not as discribed but I can live without them. There are lots of thing we were unhappy with but when the cleanliness is not right it is off putting. We came across other unclean items but we just wanted to get on with our holiday, so we stayed out as long as we could and ate out all the time. The response from lakes cottages on our return home was I was exaggerating and just wanted compensation, well to be honest yes, wouldn't you, he said if we had reported while still there it would be sorted, well I didn't feel I should have had to, it should have been done the first time correctly, but some thing didn't appear to have been cleaned for some time in my opinion.
