The Radcliffe Camera is an Oxford icon, a domed circular structure designed in 1737 by James Gibbs to house a library given by a wealthy physician. The Camera now serves as the main undergraduate reading room for Oxford University and is part of the Bodleian Library.

A 14th century college founded in honour of Queen Philippa of Hainault, wife of King Edward III. Queen's was completely rebuilt in neo-classical style in the 17th and 18th centuries. The college library holds an unequalled collection of medieval manuscripts. The chapel dates to 1719 and has remained almost unaltered.

Arguably the oldest college at Oxford, University College was founded by William of Durham in 1249 as a residence for a dozen needy students. The college once claimed to have been founded by Alfred the Great, but this claim was rejected in a court of law. The college moved to its present site on High Street in 1332.

Wadham College was founded in 1610 by Nicholas and Dorothy Wadham. It was the meeting place of the scientists who formed the Royal Society. In the front quad is a clock given by Sir Christopher Wren, who held the chair of astronomy at Wadham. The impressive Hall boasts a superb hammer-beam roof.
