The church of Holy Trinity at Blythburgh is one of the outstanding historic buildings in a county that seems to specialise in such things. There has been a church here on the banks of the River Blyth since perhaps as early as AD 630, but the current building has its roots in the 12th century when Blythburgh Priory was founded by a group of canons from Essex. In 1412 Henry IV granted the canons the right to build the current church.

Boxford is a pretty village midway between Hadleigh and Sudbury, just north of the A1071. The parish church of St Mary's stands at a junction of roads in the centre of the village. The first thing you notice about the church is the large south porch, which is strikingly light-coloured and seems to be of a different material than the rest of the building.

As you turn off the A1141 towards the little village of Brent Eleigh you go down a dip in the road into a hollow, between tall overhanging trees. It feels as if you are going back in time, and in a way, you are, back to the 13th century, when the church of St Mary was built on its steep-sided hill beside Brent Eleigh Hall.

There's not a lot to Bruisyard beyond a few farms and the old parish church, dedicated to St Peter. The church stands on a small rise of ground on the north bank of the River Alde and is approached under a lych gate and up a sloping path. The first thing you notice about St Peter's is the round tower - this could only be East Anglia!

The imposing church of St Mary's gives its name to the Suffolk version of Bures (technically, there is no such place as Bures; on the Suffolk side of the River Stour is Bures St Mary's, and on the Essex side is Bures Hamlet). The church dates in part to the 13th century, but much of the present building is 14th century. There was obviously an earlier church on the site, as the list of clergy goes back all the way to 1180.
