Cratfield is a quiet country church, the last place you'd expect to find a historic treasure - but that's what exploring English country churches is all about, isn't it? Opening the door of a medieval country church is like opening the lid of a treasure chest; you just never know what you might find inside. Here at Cratfield what you find is a superb 15th-century Seven Sacrament font, one of the finest in England.

Dalham is an idyllic rural village on the Suffolk border with Cambridgeshire, between Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket. The medieval parish church of St Mary's stands in atop a hillside overlooking the wooded valley of the River Kennet, and close to the manor house.

All Saints church in Darsham dates to the Norman period, though the impact of that earlier work was somewhat swept away by Victorian-era restoration. The village of Darsham lies five miles north of Saxmundham, three miles from the coast at Dunwich.

St Mary's dates to the late Saxon or early Norman period, and features a rare Galilee porch. Look for the ornate tomb of Sir Charles Framlingham (d 1595) and a medieval brass John Framlingham of Crows Hall. Another highlight is the 15th-century single-hammerbeam nave roof.

Dennington is an attractive north Suffolk village laid out along the A1120 between Saxtead and Badingham. The parish church of St Mary the Virgin is, without doubt, one of the most satisfying historic buildings to visit in this area of Suffolk (high praise indeed).

A wonderful example of a late Perpendicular Suffolk church, St Nicholas is built on the site of a 12th-century church, but the core of the current building is almost entirely late 15th century, with a 14th century west tower.

Entire books have been written about the history of Dunwich, telling the sad story of how this once populous Suffolk town has slowly been lost beneath the waves of the encroaching sea. Where once many churches stood (the exact number varies according to which source you consult) only one Victorian church now stands, spared because it lies well inland from the waves.

Vehicles on the busy A1120 rush through the village of Earl Stonham, never pausing to turn aside from the hustle and bustle to discover one of the most enjoyable historic churches in mid-Suffolk. The church of St Mary serves the joint parish of Earl Stonham and Stonham Parva.

The church of St Mary's in East Bergholt will forever be associated with the painter John Constable. This is the very heart of Constable Country, and the artist grew up here in the village, a short stroll from the church. Constable painted the church on numerous occasions, and his paintings provide a fascinating glimpse at this historic building in centuries past.

I've never seen a more box-like medieval church than All Saints at Ellough. The building is so squared off in places you can imagine a medieval mason getting out his axe and lopping off anything that stuck out!
