St Peter's is a pretty country church built around AD 1150. Historic highlights include 16th and 17th-century memorial brasses to members of the Browne family and several 15th-century poppyhead bench ends. Look for 16th-century graffiti in the south porch window embrasures.

St Edmundsbury Cathedral began as a medieval parish church, dedicated to St James, and was raised to cathedral status in the 20th century. The original church was built around the shrine of Edmund, king of the East Angles, who was killed by the Danes around AD 870. The nave of the church was rebuilt in about 1503 by John Wastell, a local mason who also worked on King's College Chapel, Cambridge and the bell tower of Canterbury Cathedral.

The oldest building in Bures, St Stephen's Chapel is a delightful thatched building, once the private chapel of Tauney manor. The chapel dates to 1218, when it was officially consecrated by the Archbishop of Canterbury on the traditional site where St Edmund, King of the East Angles, was crowned in AD 855.

All Saints is a pretty 14th-century church on the site of an earlier Saxon building. It boasts a 13th-century font, 16th-century memorial brass, and a 14th-century tomb recess built for Lord Hervey de Stanton, Chancellor to King Edward II.

St Mary's is a 14th-century church on the site of a Saxon minster. The church is filled with historical monuments including an ornate 1634 memorial to Sir Francis Mannock, and wonderful late medieval memorial brasses. The historical highlight is an outstanding 15th-century wooden doorway carved as a Tree of Jesse.
