The Strid is a stretch of narrow chasms on the River Wharfe, north of Bolton Abbey. The Wharfe is generally wide and slow-moving, but here it narrows to create a series of chasms and swift rushing water. The Strid was formed by the movement of small stones against the soft underlying rock, creating potholes which then joined together the create the chasms.

The White Horse at Kilburn is a chalk figure carved into the hillside above this attractive North Yorkshire village. The chalk figure was the brainchild of Thomas Taylor, a Kilburn native, who in 1857 decided that his village needed a white horse even more grand and exciting than established chalk figures in the south of England (such as the one at Westbury, Wiltshire).

The Wolds Way is one of England's national trails, a long-distance footpath stretching through the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Wolds from the Humber estuary to the North Sea. The going is not generally difficult, but the sense of wide-open space prevails. There are few villages along the trail, but the route does pass the most famous deserted village in Britain - Wharram Percy.

One of the largest and most scenic of England's National Parks, the Yorkshire Dales is a landscape of open fields split by dry stone walls, with small villages in the valley bottoms. The Pennine mountains run roughly north-south through the park, and the Pennine Way national trail draws thousands of walkers every year. Quite apart from the scenic beauty of the Dales, this is walking country. It is also James Herriot country, for this is the area where Britain's favourite vet had his fictional adventures.
