Thomason Foss
Thomason Foss

Thomason Foss is a picturesque waterfall between the villages of Goathland and Beck Hole in the heart of the North York Moors National Park. The waterfall is set in a pretty woodland ravine on Eller Beck. The North Yorkshire Moors heritage railway runs just to the north of the waterfall at the top of the ravine.

Thomason Foss is not spectacular in the style of Mallyan Spout a few miles away at Goathland, but the setting is wonderful and it is one of the easiest waterfalls to reach in the National Park.

Getting There

You can follow the Eller Beck from Mallyan Spout and Goathland but by far the easiest way to reach the waterfall is by taking the signposted footpath from Beck Hole. There is a layby along the lane through the village just north of the beck, and a parking area at the top of the hill if you don't mind a longer walk.

From the bridge at Beck Hole opposite the pub simply follow the well-trodden path. The trail keeps close to the beck for several hundred metres before climbing to the top of the ravine where you are almost within touching distance of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway track. We were fortunate enough to be passing the track when a train came through on its way north to Whitby and it was quite a sight!

Please wear good waterproof footwear. The trail can be muddy and slippery in places. It ends well short of the waterfall and to get the best views you have to scramble over boulders along the beck to approach the base of the falls. You can certainly see the falls from further back, but to get a decent photo you'll want to scramble much closer.

When we visited on a sunny afternoon in summer there was no one else around, though we did pass several walkers on the trail, so clearly Thomason Foss is a popular destination. It is relatively easy going and won't take a reasonably fit person more than 20 minutes to reach the waterfall. It is no more than 500 metres from Beck Hole (roughly 1650 feet).
