Historic Buildings in Yorkshire

Gilling Castle began as a fortified manor house in the 14th century. The foundations of that early building form the cellar of the current structure, created by Sir William Fairfax in the late 16th century. The Elizabethan building was later expanded and remodelled by Viscount Fairfax of Emley in the 18th century, with the aide of architect Sir John Vanbrugh (or perhaps James Gibbs). The castle is now home to St Martins, a prep school for Ampleforth College.

The Howden Bishop's Manor (sometimes called a Bishop's Palace) stands a stone's throw from the remains of Howden Minster, just off the market square. The manor was built to provide a residence and administrative centre for the powerful Prince Bishops of Durham, who stayed here on their way between Durham and London.

A brick-built 18th century merchant's house on High Street in Hull. The house is a living reminder of Hull's prosperity as a centre of shipping and commerce during the Georgian period. The building is currently used as offices, so only the grand plasterwork front hall and staircase can be viewed.

The Mansion House is an elegant Georgian building that has been the official residence of the Lord Mayor of York since the early 18th century. It was the first house in England to be built expressly for a Lord Mayor and was erected at least two decades before the Mansion House in London.

A small medieval house on The Shambles is the location of St Margaret Clitherow's House. Clitherow was executed at the height of anti-Catholicism in Elizabethan England for harbouring a priest and refusing to abjure her faith. The house thought to have been hers is now a shrine.

A lovely 14th-century gatehouse on the banks of the River Ure is all that remains of the fortified manor house of Tanfield Castle. The exact location of the manor is not known, but generations of its owners lie buried in the neighbouring parish church, where their monuments can be seen.

The Merchant Adventurers' Hall is sadly overlooked by many visitors to York. Let's rectify that! The Hall is a superb medieval building, one of the best-preserved examples of a medieval guildhall in England. The Hall was begun in 1357 and remains largely unaltered. The Hall undercroft served as a local hospital until 1900.

Norton Conyers is an attractive late medieval manor thought to have been the inspiration for Charlotte Bronte's Thornfield Hall in the novel Jane Eyre. The manor was owned by the Graham family from 1624 (with the exception of a brief period in the late 19th century).

Nunnington Hall is a lovely Elizabethan manor house of mellow stone, remodelled in 1600 and again in 1885. The house stands in a lovely location beside the River Rye. The interiors feature changing exhibitions of art and photography, as well as a collection of miniature rooms furnished with minuscule furniture and musical instruments. Near the Hall is a walled organic garden, restored to its 17th-century state.
