This beautiful medieval building was erected in 1419 as a residence for the treasurer of York Minster. The interiors boast fine medieval furnishings, plus 17th and 18th-century furniture. According to legend, workmen doing repairs to the cellar saw a ghostly troop of Roman legionaries.

Walmgate Bar is one of the four surviving medieval city gates of York. The oldest part of the gate dates to the 12th century, with the addition of a 14th-century barbican, 15th-century oak doors, and Tudor timber-framed extension. The Bar is now home to a popular cafe.

The most modern property in the care of English Heritage is a partly underground bunker constructed during the height of the Cold War as a military fallout shelter and command post in the event of nuclear war. The York Cold War Bunker is officially known as Number 20 Group Royal Observer Corps HQ and was in service for 30 years from 1961 until 1991.

York Guildhall is an authentic replica of the original 15th-century Guildhall, which was destroyed by bombs during World War II. The Guildhall was built to offer a meeting place for the powerful merchant guilds of York, which together formed a quasi-civic government in the medieval period. The windows of the Guildhall feature stained glass depicting scenes from York's history.
