This intriguing plaque on Park Street, Southwark, commemorates an incident in 1850 involving General Julius Jacob von Haynau, nicknamed 'The Austrian Butcher'. Haynau, who was also known as the 'Hyena of Brescia', for his brutal treatment of rebels in Italy, was visiting a brewery in Southwark when he was recognised by two draymen working there, named Barclay & Perkins. The draymen attacked and beat Haynau, thus instigating an international political incident. Years later, Garibaldi made a special point of visiting Southwark to thank the men involved.
