Victoria Cottage is an ideal base for visiting the many attractions nearby and exploring the area.

Great Location
A deceptively large Victorian terrace house we picked it because of the location and the fact we could bring our dog. A couple of negative things were the time delay to get hot water through the system and the Fridge Freezer had seen better days and was broken in places. We thought the advantages outweighed these and included off street parking, close to supermarkets and other shops, easy drive to places like Saltburn plus station just down the road for longer trips - we went to Middlesbrough by train.

We stayed in Victoria Cottage over Christmas and New Year 2018/2019, booked for us by my parents as a special Christmas present. From the description and photos on the Sykes website it all seemed ideal and we were looking forward to our stay. However, the reality was quite different. We think it's reasonable to expect a holiday let and its furnishings to be clean and in good condition. Our general impression of Victoria Cottage was that it needs professional decorating and renovation throughout, grubby furnishings thoroughly cleaned, and worn furnishings repaired or replaced. There were lots of little things -and some big things ? which together completely spoiled our stay at the cottage. The list of horrors is very long but here are just some of the problems. Rusty dusty radiators upstairs and downstairs; grubby sofa and chairs in the living room; badly stained rug in the dining room as well as extensive heat stains on the table; in the kitchen the kettle was desperately in need of descaling, worn and grubby bread board and kitchen utensils, greasy stained oven gloves (all 3 pairs!), dirty microwave, cutlery and pans needed washing before use. In the double bedroom ? badly scuffed fireplace, dusty dirty bedside cupboards, the hairbrush on the chest of drawers was full of hairs and dust, mattress uncomfortable, saggy and heavily stained ? on both sides! No mattress protector either, just a very thin sheet! The single front bedroom ? badly scuffed floorboards, saggy, horribly stained mattress (again, no mattress protector, just a very thin sheet), dusty floor. The venetian blinds and thin curtains in the bedrooms were as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike and didn?t stop the very bright light from the streetlamp directly outside the house ? result was that the two front bedrooms were illuminated the whole night. That together with the disgusting mattresses made it very difficult to sleep. The single back bedroom ? scuffed floorboards, small black rug covered with dust and hairs, uncomfortable saggy, stained mattress. The chest of drawers in each of the bedrooms seemed to have a sprinkling of sand in every drawer, with several small bits of paper presumably acting as drawer liner, and difficult to open drawers. The sight of the stained mattresses made our skin crawl! Nasties in the bathroom were mould and dirt in the sealing and grouting by the bath and on the windowsill, weird rusty wire mesh basket instead of a decent bathroom cabinet or shelf for toiletries, dark tide mark all around (plastic) bathtub, pullcord for bathroom light dirty and stained, toilet seat has seen better days. Yet Sykes Cottages have the gall to say on their website that they offer holiday homes of the highest standards, that the key to their success is in the selection and quality of their properties, and that each property has the added benefit of being supervised personally by the owner or caretaker!! By saying that they aim to gain peoples? trust - and unfortunately then abuse it. Despite receiving feedback from my parents back in January, Sykes have still not been in touch. In our opinion both Sykes and the owners of Victoria Cottage seem to focus only on profit for themselves rather than any kind of service or respect to paying guests. We would not recommend booking with Sykes Holidays or Victoria Cottage in its current state.

Loved Marske
Thoroughly enjoyed our week. House is in a good position for all local amenities. Alfie our dog loved living so close to the beach so did we. Some minor niggles such as the need for some new less grubby kitchen/cook ware /utensils but as we didn?t eat often at the house it didn?t affect us too much this time. Thanks for a lovely week. Wished that we had booked for longer. Marske is a beautiful area not yet ruined by commercialism but provides all you need within reasonable reach.

Excellent in every way couldn't have asked for more
Stayed here for 1 week with my boyfriend and dog Lucy. He went kite surfing to Redcar, we spent the week chilling walking to the beach within a slow 10 minute walk or less if you are a fast walker. Everything on your door step. On the High Street so a busy road but never bothered me and I come from a home with no traffic. So clean and fresh smelling from the moment you walk in. Parking tight at the back but we took 2 cars and fitted the one behind the other Short drive to Saltburn & Staithes but much preferred where we were longest stretches of clean beaches here. Lots of shops for convenience, 3 pubs 2 are dog friendly - cheap and cheerful and the staff at The Ship and The Zetland could not do more for us. Before we went asked for more photos on here but never got them so added lots more myself. The cottage has been changed since original listings and upgraded lots. Small yard at the back but just across the road recreation ground to walk the dog. Most definitely will be back here again

Is a very nice property. Very homely and quiet, and off road parking is great. A good place to go touring from.
