Lovely weekend break
We had a lovely weekend at the Old Manse. The owners have clearly read all previous reviews and made any necessary improvements. Big American fridge freezer with water and ice, both ovens fully working, shower absolutely fine, hot tub very clean. The decoration is very quirky, house was very clean with comfy beds. I text the owner a few times for advice on where to have dinner and how to work the heating, the responses were very quick and helpful. We would definitely stay here again.
OK, but a few issues.
Firstly the positives: very comfortable beds, great hot tub, lots of books and games. Ample parking, easy to find. TV took as a little while to get right but no problems from then on. Very near the town which has some interesting aspects and nice cafes/shops.
Things that could be improved: shower switch broken as mentioned in other reviews. Fridge did work but froze some food despite not over-filling. One of the ovens doesn?t work, but the other does and so does the grill. It would be nice to have some basics provided such as soap, dishwasher tablets, washing powder. We?ve stayed in a lot of holiday rentals and these things have always been provided.
Dog friendly? Not ideal for dogs actually. They?re not allowed upstairs and the only outside area is upstairs and through a bedroom. This is where the hot-tub is. This makes letting your dog to the toilet rather difficult, and entails going for a walk every time it?s necessary.
The decor you?ll either love or hate. Some of it took some explaining to our 3 year old who was rather scared of the life sized lady in the hallway!
On first arriving the first thing we noticed was the state of the windows, I know the property is on a main road but its not a busy road and no excuse for a rental property, the dirt looked like it had been there for months. First impressions inside were excellent all the rooms are very welcoming and quirky, however after closer inspection in became apparent that a duster hadn't been used for a while, especially on higher areas, light fittings in the kitchen and top of the fridge which also didn't work properly and you couldn't change the temperature because it was broken. Also again referring back to windows, you could hardly see through the dining room window (this also had ivy growing in through the window from outside) or one of the lounge windows for the dirt.
Other things became more annoying as the week went on, ie the shower had a broken switch and needed descaling as although it had an impressive shower head the water came out in one big drip, certainly not ideal. Also the washing machine was so high off the ground we had to drag a chair from the dining room to stand on so that we could put the detergent in the draw.
We were all very excited to go into the hot tub as it was the main reason we chose the property in the first place, when we lifted the lid the water had obviously not been either cleaned or refilled as it was full of other peoples hair, the water was also very cloudy and had a strange smell about it. We found out that there were chemicals and instructions under the sink, we did the best we could as none of us have ever had to clean a hot tub before (not something you want to do when you are on holiday) I have stayed in many cottages with hot tubs and have had some one visiting every day to check the PH levels and adding the relevant chemicals, I'm not one to complain usually but after spending almost ?1000 on a week in this place I didn't expect to want to come home to my own comforts after a few days. All in all the house itself it lovely and in an excellent position, however its the little things that count, and the little things in this case were not up to standard at all.
Lovely Cottage ............Not ideal really for people with dogs
We stayed here in June 2017 and were surprised to see that the cottage wasn't in the middle of nowhere as the picture can look, it is directly on the high street with houses all round it. Excellent photography skills at Sykes.
Here's our review...
? Located opposite the Three Tuns Brewery which is a lovely pub, the brewed ales and food are fantastic. This gets full quickly so I recommend booking ? even on a week night !
? The cottage itself is really lovely inside, the d?cor is unusual and surprising at first but it really grows on you. The kitchen / dining area is lovely and great for big groups, we had family with us for some of the days and sitting round the large table eating or playing cards was great.
? The hot tub is fantastic, very clean, warm and relaxing. Don?t forget your towels for this.
? There are hundreds of books and games provided for use during your stay which I think is a lovely touch.
? The heating works great, when we got cold the house warmed up really fast.
? On road parking outside the cottage is readily available
? When contacting the owners they appeared very pleasant
Negatives / Minor Issues;
? There is no garden or outdoor area for dogs. This unfortunately was a major issue for us and spoilt our holiday .
The advert might say garden/patio ?.. there is no garden or land to our knowledge except upstairs terrace by the hot tub.
? None of the doors downstairs shut i.e. stay closed. Not ideal for people with dogs when you are trying to keep them downstairs at night. Perhaps take stair gates with you.
? The fridge is broken and destroyed all our fresh food, a note states this will happen if you overfill the fridge. We did not overfill it. This is noted in another review. I really think this is something the owners should look at given the fact this is self-catering a fridge is such an important aspect.
As you can see not many negatives and I think for adults booking a week away together with no dogs I?d say this accommodation is probably absolutely perfect !!!
P.s We booked through Skyes, we dont personally recommend them, their service was poor after full payment was received.
Nice place, shame about the state
Large old house, well-situated, with great pub and shops nearby. Parking is no problem. Furniture and beds fine.
Cooker failed to reach temperature; fridge froze our food; heating not working in bathroom; shower partially blocked and with faulty on/off switch.
CO alarms, chopping boards (for meat, veg) all absent.
Communication from owner was not great.
Owner seems to deny there is a problem with any of the above, though has now apparently installed one CO detector, however there are two fires in separate rooms.
Beware the slippery decking. Be prepared for a hernia when trying to close the front door.
The one TV that receives live channels is interrupted approx every two minutes, so watching TV is not a pleasant experience.
Mucky on some high parts (e.g. tops of window frames, fridge etc.). Empty bottle under a bed; previous guest's trunks behind a radiator.
The pool table is in an unheated garage and only one cue is usable.
I am not an habitual complainer, nor do I lie or exaggerate.
