Cottage fine but could do with a little TLC We stayed with our dog for a long weekend in this cottage. The cottage location was lovely, on a caravan site with an on-site bistro, a little river down the bottom of the site and a beautiful Abbey to explore. The cottage was at the end of a row of 3 and was equipped with a twin bedroom, bathroom, lounge and kitchenette upstairs and a double bedroom and ensuite shower room downstairs. On the whole the cottage was clean and tidy on our arrival, however we did notice some major cobwebs on the ceilings that have obviously been there a long time, such a shame the cleaner doesn't just get the hoover nozzle on them, then problem solved. The kitchenette had what you need for basics but was not very big so quite limited in terms of work surface and equipment provided, plus it had certainly seen better days with the cutlery drawer practically falling off whenever you opened it. There were areas in the decor that had seen better days also, with flaking paint and more cobwebs - nothing a little TLC wouldn't sort. Also these days you kind of expect there to be some basic welcome stuff in a cottage, e.g. washing up liquid but not here. You may think I am being overly fussy but I felt that for the price (£90 per night) the cottage should have been cleaner and better equipped as i have paid less for cottages that are far nicer than this one. Having said that for 3 nights it was perfectly adequate, the shower was hot and easy to use and the bed was very comfortable and the towels and bedlinens were clean. There was no welcome information in the cottage, just a bistro menu, however we did eventually find some local attraction leaflets in the TV cabinet drawer, hidden amongst a load of trashy magazines dating back to 2007 and a 2006/07 yellow pages - seems no-one has had a sort out of this drawer for many years, again a simple thing to remedy if only someone could be bothered. The staff in the reception area were friendly as were the family who worked in the bistro, and we enjoyed two very nice meals in the Bistro which had the added benefit (to us) of being dog friendly so pooch could come with us when we ate out. All in all the cottage was acceptable for a 3 night stay but I don't think i would want to come here for a week as it all seemed a little unloved and as if they're just getting by on offering the basics - fine when you charge a basic price but I don't feel £90 per night is a basic price. A few problems but a nice place to stay. DO NOT BOOK THROUGH SYKES COTTAGES We really enjoyed our stay at End Cottage. It is a lovely location and a lovely cottage. We experienced a few problems with the cottage though. The cottage wasn't that clean (lots of cobwebs and dust), but I wouldn't say it was dirty or we wouldn't have stayed. Some of the listed amenities were missing or not working correctly. After contacting Sykes Cottages (booking agent), the owner was very apologetic and offered a partial refund, we received reassurance that the issues would be resolved for future guests.
However, I would NOT recommend booking through Sykes Cottages. After the owner agreed to give a partial refund we received terrible service from Sykes Cottages. They took the amount from my account instead of refunding it, causing me to incur overdraft charges. I also had phone charges from ringing my bank to find out what had happened and then phone costs of ringing Sykes Cottages. They were VERY unhelpful!! They then told me that they couldn't put the money directly back into my account but could send me a cheque. So they can take money without my permission but cant refund to my account?!?! This meant a delay, as I had to wait for the cheque to arrive and then for it to clear. After incurring charges of approximately £70 in charges for THEIR mistake, they sent me £20 compensation!. I will never book through Sykes Cottages again, as they clearly cannot be trusted and don't care. Please understand that this is not the fault of the cottage owner, we would visit the cottage again. Sykes Cottages are just a booking agent, I would advise that you book directly with the owner if possible. FangtasiaFan 2014-05-28
