This character stone-built cottage near the village of Orton sleeps two people.

The Gatehouse is a unique, stone-built character cottage in the hamlet of Kelleth, three miles from the village of Orton, close to the Lake District National Park. This cottage sleeps two people in a galleried king-size double bedroom. The cottage also has a bathroom with cast-iron bath, kitchen and a sitting room with dining area and woodburning stove.

Outside there is off road parking for one car and a front lawned garden with patio and bench. The Gatehouse is an ideal retreat for a couple, with walks and cycle routes in the area, the Settle-Carlisle railway, two National Parks and a number of villages and towns that are waiting to be discovered.

Shabby, dusty, cold, draughty old barn
The owner was having a massage (she lives next door) when we arrived and stated "I knew you would turn up now" - we couldn't park our car and then a neighbour quickly pointed out we couldn't park by her house either. We have a new car and wanted it safely parked. Not a good start to our holiday. Later the owner called round to say we could move our car in front of her house. We said that we were cold and the owner said light the log burner. She did turn up the heating but we still had to sit with coats on. I did light the log burner and it was warmer then. Unfortunately it was windy and so the doors and windows let in quite a draught. The owner seemed disinterested in us as guests in her accommodation. What a disappointment when we arrived to find cold, dusty accommodation. The pictures don't show the shabbiness and must have been taken some years ago. The key to the door was bent and it was quite a struggle in the dark to open it. The light outside by the door wasn't working. The towels looked very old and extremely well used and faded. The bed was comfortable and the sheets were clean. It is very quirky and in warm weather probably more acceptable to stay in but not warm enough for us. There were dog hairs on the lumpy sofa and we had to put a cover over just to sit down. When the heating came on the pipes made a tremendous noise and kept us awake. The cooker was dirty and I had to wash the extremely old cups and plates before we used them. The shelves in the kitchen and sitting room were all dirty and tatty. There was no microwave but I spotted one disposed at the side of the owners house. Please message me and I can send you some photos if you are considering going. We found 2 lovely pubs nearby in Ravenstonedale and we did some good walks so would recommend it as a nice area to stay but somewhere else.. We left after 5 of 7 nights as we wanted to get home to a clean draught free house. I wouldn't go back if it was free.

This is a very chic cottage with an interior that I defy anyone to find elsewhere for us. It was awesome and our two dogs loved it too. We will be going again.
Mr Lloyd

Loved The Gatehouse; loved the d?cor, the open plan design and it's location. The boys enjoyed the hammock in the living room. We also loved the bedroom and the bathroom.
Mrs Stokes

Really enjoyed our stay in the heart of the Lake District. The Gatehouse was lovely with a great garden, WiFi, TV and a wood burner to entertain the kids and the adults. Loved the piano.
Mr Dixon

Absolutely wonderful place, the view out of the windows, the slightly bizarre but beautiful and romantic, decoration, the roll top bath, the heavy curtains, the books, the comfortable and luxurious bed, the wood burner. Perfect.
