One of the smaller Cambridge colleges, St Catherine's College was founded in 1473 by Robert Woodlark and received a royal charter two years later. There was initially no place for undergraduates; the college consisted solely of a master and two fellows. Things began to look up in 1626 when Dr John Gostlin gave the Bull Inn to St Catherine's. The college used the income from the inn to erect a new building on Queens' Lane and offer 6 scholarships. A chapel was added in 1704.

St John's College dates to 1511 and was founded by Margaret Beaufort, the mother of Henry VII. Lady Margaret, who died two years previously, left a bequest to transform the 13th-century hospital of St John the Evangelist into a college for the liberal arts and theology. The oldest part of the college is the School of Pythagoras, built in 1200 and now serving as the dramatic society of St John's. In 1624 construction began on a Library, funded by John Williams, Bishop of Lincoln.

Trinity College was founded by King Henry VIII in 1546 by combining the 14th-century colleges of King's Hall and Michaelhouse. The latter was founded in 1324 and King's Hall in 1317. Despite the medieval underpinnings of Trinity College, most of the college buildings date from the 16th and 17th centuries. They combine to create a series of lovely courts, particularly Great Court, designed by Thomas Nevile in the late 16th century. The library of Trinity was designed by Sir Christopher Wren.

Trinity Hall is one of the small Cambridge colleges and is often overlooked by visitors who flock to its namesake, Trinity College, located immediately beside the Hall. Trinity Hall was founded in 1350 by Bishop Bateman of Norwich to provide for a new population of clergy and lawyers in the wake of the Black Death. Hidden between larger neighbours and blessed with riverside frontage, Trinity is one of the most attractive colleges in Cambridge and deserves its reputation as a hidden gem.
