St Benedict's Church, Haltham-on-Bain, is a lovely Norman country church, very simple in plan, consisting of only a nave, chancel, and south porch, with a peculiar little wooden bell turret set off centre of the west gable.
Haltham village appears in the Domesday Book, so it is entirely possible that this attractive little church was standing at that time.
A Norman Tympanum
The south doorway has a strangely carved Norman tympanum, with an odd geometric design, but the most unusual feature of the church is found within, where the Georgian box pews are found facing in different directions. There is a three-tiered Jacobean pulpit, and a rood screen adapted for use as a family pew.
St Benedict's is no longer used for regular worship and is in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.
