The Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds is the only surviving Regency playhouse in all of Britain. The interior is sumptuously decorated in Regency neoclassical style. There are regular performances of both modern and historical entertainments.
History
The Theatre Royal was built in 1819 by William Wilkins. At the time it was one of the most avant-garde examples of theatrical architecture in Europe. It features a lovely painted ceiling and a small, intimate seating area with private boxes in a gallery area above. The Theatre Royal gives a fascinating glimpse into the era of Regency Theatre.
Entertaining guided tours are available if booked through the theatre box office. Regular performances include children's theatre, Georgian plays and rehearsed readings, plus drama, comedy, music and other live performances. The Theatre has limited opening hours outside of events; please see the National Trust website for details.
The Theatre Royal is very well signposted from around Bury town centre and is within an easy walking distance of the Abbey.
