Oak Beck is the dirtiest place we've ever stayed
After having to reschedule our holiday in 2020 we were looking forward to our family getaway. We arrived at Oak Beck, Windermere and first impressions were good. The cottage is conveniently located between Windermere and Bowness and from the outside it look lovely. Once inside it was clear that no cleaning other than a quick change of bedding had been undertaken. There were cobwebs along the stairs and the window area was dirty with dead flies and moths on the ledge and thick dust on the blinds. The bathroom radiator was dirty, the floor contained dead insects, dust and the shower screen was smeared with shower gel from the previous occupants. The sink and toilet were also marked. My daughters bedding was stained. There were used plasters in the back bedroom draws and earbuds in the main bedroom draw, as well as a pair of socks in the wardrobe of the back bedroom. The only source of hot water was in the shower and kitchen. The hot water in the main bathroom trickled and wasn't serviceable and there was no hot water in the basement toilet. The backyard is small, really small and not sufficient for dogs. There is a communal area at the rear across a small road, however its not dog friendly. The photographs in the ad don't show this and I've noticed since our booking some of the wording has changed. But if your looking for a proper dog friend cottage, this isn't it. We took our dog out first thing in a morning and night to the stream down the hill to do his business because the back yard was so small. Not environmentally friendly - What we couldn't understand was that there was no apparent recycling units for cardboard or tins, etc. We did mention this to the agent, but they didn't comment on it. We've been renting cottages for years and this has to be the dirtiest cottage we have ever stayed in. The first thing we did, after contacting the agents and providing photographic evidence of the lack of cleanliness was to start cleaning. This really wasn't how we saw the first day of our holiday panning out. The agents did send someone out to change my daughters bedding, and a plumber out to look at the water issue, but as the water issue remained the same we presumed that he was unable to fix it. My husband spent some time arranging these appointments. We were supposed to be out walking the hills with the kids not on the phone arranging for cleaners to change bedding and plumbers to call round.
