The London Dungeon bills itself as the World's First Medieval Horror Museum. Like a good scare? Then you've come to the right place. Experience death in living colour, from the Theatre of the Guillotine to a special Great Fire of London display. A tip: don't come right after eating lunch.
The Dungeon combines 'dark rides', theatrical effects and actors, with terrifying tales of the macabre. There are 360 scenes, or 'sets' exploring different dark and dreadful deeds and characters from British history.
The Dungeon does not just use tableaux, or static scenes to recreate the past, but 20 live actors, and almost as many interactive shows to bring 1000 years of British history to life. There are 2 underground rides and chilling special effects.
Lest you think everything at the Dungeon is terrifying, be reassured that a streak of (very black) humour runs throughout the Dungeon experience. The Dungeon bills itself as 'the black comedy' of attractions, with one eye firmly fixed on the funny side of terror!
Professional actors guide visitors through a 90-minute experience, getting up close and very personal with some of Britain's darkest deeds and even darker characters. Take a journey through the misty alleys of Whitechapel as you follow Jack the Ripper, and meet Sweeney Todd, the 'Demon Barber of Fleet Street'.
Popular exhibits recreate the Black Death in 1348, and a 'what if' scenario exploring what would have happened if Guy Fawkes had not been stopped from exploding his gunpowder under the Houses of Parliament in 1605.
The Dungeon is exceptionally popular, and I've passed the entrance with long lineups, so give yourself plenty of time - or pre-book online and jump the queues. The experience is not recommended for children under 8 years old, and anyone under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
