This attractive end-terrace mews is situated on the banks of the River Esk one mile from Whitby in Yorkshire and can sleep seven people in three bedrooms.

Waters Edge is a delightful end-terrace mews property on a modern development on the banks of the River Esk, one mile from Whitby and close to the North York Moors National Park. The cottage can sleep seven people in one king-size double bedroom, one double, one adult bunks room and with the addition of a single sofa bed in the dining area. The cottage has two family bathrooms. The rest of the cottage consists of a kitchen with dining area and a sitting room. Outside the cottage there is off road parking for two cars, a private patio with furniture and communal lawned grounds. Waters Edge is a superb base for families or a group of friends looking to explore this beautiful region.

Great potential but disappointing
This holiday cottage is in a fabulous location next to the river, is fairly well equipped and has a good layout for families of all ages. So why the poor rating? On arrival the house was very dirty with food dried onto the kitchen surfaces (inside and outside of cupboards), dirty placemats on the table, dirty bathrooms, stained furnishings and bedding, and a high level of grime on all surfaces. The owner came out quickly to address this when it was raised, and made an attempt to put it right, but clearly felt that the standard of cleanliness was sufficient. It looked like it hadn't been cleaned in weeks, and we spent our first day cleaning the house so that it felt comfortable enough for us to enjoy the rest of our stay - not something we have ever had to do before. The house and contents also need a bit of TLC - there were cracks in the plaster and paint, and some of the furnishings and furniture could do with replacing. The dining chairs were dangerous to sit on because the fixings were so loose. The owner came out to tighten the fixings when we reported this but they were loose again within a day or two. The washing machine ran very hot no matter what temperature was selected. The clothes were certainly clean but a few items came out rather worse for wear after their wash. Many of the visitors who had signed the Visitor's Book complained about the cleanliness and some noted other problems that needed fixing. We really enjoyed the location. Whitby has lots to do, a great beach, some good restaurants, and at the house we enjoyed the river views, watching the steam trains passing and feeding the ducks. We'd definitely go back to this particular holiday estate, but we'd choose one of the other cottages.

Picturesque setting by the river
A lovely, homely property with every convenience, we enjoyed our stay very much. There was even a coffee machine, so I did not have to suffer withdrawal symptoms during our stay! The property is in the valley under the old viaduct, we were able to take the short walk into Whitby along it. It overlooks the river, it was very peaceful yet interesting, with daily visits from seals & the old lifeboat.

We had a great week at the Waters Edge, the location was fantastic, the weather was rather good and the local wildlife was interesting. The towels, as well as the fixtures and fittings were of good quality.
