Burwell Museum and Windmill

Learn what village life was like on the edge of the Cambridgeshire Fens at the Burwell Museum and Windmill. This fascinating outdoor museum is based around Stevens Mill, an early 19th-century windmill.

Also on the site are a timber-framed barn, shepherd's hut, a wheelwright's shop and blacksmith forge, wagon sheds, and an unusual revolving summerhouse.

There is a small Roman pottery kiln, a collection of vintage vehicles, and one of the most recent additions; a WWII Nissen Hut. Inside are artefacts from both World Wars, including military uniforms, and items from 'the home front'.

The main visitor centre buildings include a gallery of local history and a large area with audio-visual displays that aim to bring local history alive for visitors. There is a large archive of old photographs from the Burwell area, dating to 1900. Other archival material includes census records and local reference books that might interest genealogical researchers.

One exhibit recreates the Farming Year, with historic farm tools and machines. See a recreated Victorian school room, a village shop, rebuilt rural bus cab, and a Saxon skeleton found locally.

Seasonal opening - usually Easter through October, but please check the museum website for current details.
