Reineval Chambered Cairn is one of the best-preserved Neolithic chambered cairns in the Uists, and also one of the easiest to access. Reineval sits in an exposed position on the northern slope of Beinn Reinebhal. The cairn is about 75 feet wide at the base, which is set with upright kerb stones, of which about 12 are still standing.
The mound is about 12 feet high, with a 3-foot-wide entrance to the main chamber.
Unlike many chambered cairns, the entrance does not appear to have been disturbed. The location is quite wonderful, with views up the valley to the east.
A mile to the south stands a similar chambered cairn at Barp Frobost.
Visiting
It is really easy to find Reineval cairn; take the Mingarry turnoff east from the A865. Where the paved road ends take the right fork up the farm track. The cairn is easily visible on the slope ahead of you, about half a mile ahead.
