Abernethy Forest
Abernethy Forest

The largest native Scots pine woodland in the UK, Abernethy Forest is an area of ancient Caledonian pine forest in the north-east corner of the Cairngorm National Park. To the north, Abernethy borders on the Spey Valley. It takes its name from the River Nethy, which flows through the forest to join the Spey.

Within the boundaries of Abernethy is Loch Garten, a large loch famous for its Osprey Centre, where visitors can observe those elusive birds of prey via a 'nest cam' CCTV.

Waymarked footpaths lead through the forest, creating some extremely nice circular walks. One footpath leads to Loch Mallachie, where there are stunning sunset views.

Abernethy is home to a large population of wildlife, especially breeding woodland birds like Capercaillie, goldeneye, crested tit, and crossbill.

There is an Information Centre in Nethybridge, in addition to the RSPB visitor centre at Loch Garten Osprey Centre.
