Just Wasn't For Us ...
The Retreat just wasn't for us and we were left feeling disheartened because we had been looking forward to going there. It was built in the 1860's ish I think as an outhouse for the then row of four farm cottages that are still there, beside The Retreat behind a brick wall, now residential properties, the owner lives in one of them. The door you see on the picture here leads you into a very tiny compact kitchen, very small indeed, room for only one person, the microwave was too high up for me to reach on my tip toes and there are no windows to opem in the kitchen. There is a door either side of the kitchen, one leads into a small shower room / toilet and the other into the living room. The shower was actually ok but the toilet very close to the door I had to sit sideways on it otherwise when I stood up I would bang my head and knees on the door. The living room is the size of a small garage, some might indeed find it's rustic appearance quaint and it's compactness cosy but I just felt claustrophic and with nowhere to put our luggage we were falling over eaxh other all week. There is a pleasant seating area outside however and the highlight of our week was watching a woodpecker feed from the bird feeder and butterfllies on the flower bed. Unfortunately my husband trapped his thmb in one of the two very old rusty heavy skylghts we needed to open for air and burnt three of his fingers on a very hot light in the bathroom.

The location and setting of the cottage was excellent, a truly 'retreat' nature. We have never stayed anywhere as small as this but the design and use of space was ingenious. It was also well equipped, with everything you could needed.

Compact accommodation with everything needed. The garden space was lovely and the location was very peaceful yet central for a multitude of places to visit.
