The lochside road in Letterfearn
The lochside road in Letterfearn

Letterfearn is a small settlement on the western bank of Loch Duich, in Lochalsh, Scottish Highlands. The settlement is stretched out along the minor road that runs along the loch from Ratagan to the southeast.

The settlement we see today evolved from a crofting township of houses set at angles to each other along the loch shore.

Most of the whitewashed houses we see today are rented out as holiday cottages.

From Letterfearn you can get excellent views of Eilean Donan Castle on the far side of Loch Duich. Looking down the loch gives outstanding views of the famous Five Sisters of Kintail peaks.

If you follow the road through Letterfearn to its end at Totaig, then continue on a footpath that hugs the shore, you will come to the remains of Totaig Broch (Caisteal Grugaig), built in the late 1st millennium BC.

Our family stayed at a holiday cottage in Letterfearn for a wonderful week in late summer. The location was simply superb, with unforgettable views over the loch.
