Could be better...!
We booked a weekend break at Beech cottage; we had no idea what to expect, but have stayed at farms/cottages many times before. When we arrived on the Friday (as booked), the owner (we had to ask who she was as there was no introduction) said she thought we weren't coming until Saturday...?.- we had paper confirmation etc. I had also telephoned the owner the day before, left a message but no one had phoned me back. The cottage hadn't reportedly been cleaned from the last guests - as the owner allegedly wasn't aware we were coming on the Friday,....there was no apology from the owner, so a poor start really. (Its awful to be reminded that others have been there - dirty linen, towels etc...). Anyway, once 'cleaned' the cottage is lovely. Unfortunately we did find cobwebs on the bedroom walls, food remains in the oven and the fire hadn't been swept...oh and a pair of underpants and socks from a previous occupant in the bedroom drawers...! The cottage itself is small and cozy - BUT, there is a doorway from the lounge into the owners house which is covered with thin board, as you can hear everything - and probably vice-versa (I'm not sure they realise this). As its their kitchen, you also get food/cooking smells coming through the doorway. The owners have a young family and two dogs, and although all pleasant enough, you do kinda feel that you're imposing upon the family as you live so close to them. The farm is huge, with goats, chickens and donkeys; its a very peaceful spot. Other issues were; there is an aircon unit outside the cottage, below the bedroom window which does hum; if you're a light sleeper like me it may disturb your sleep. Also, there was no information folder of do's and don't's, or info on basics like bins, walks around the farm etc. Non of this information was volunteered by the owner - we even over the weekend accumulated a pile of full dog poo bags outside the door, but no idea on where to put them! (The only info in the cottage is a slip of paper with the internet code and password on and a pile of leaflets on attractions). So, we enjoyed the area, the farm is lovely, but the family noise through the door meant it was sometimes hard to relax, and we talked in whispers as we felt they could probably also hear us! We had a good weekend, but do feel that the owner could do more re better cleaning, sorting the dividing door issue and providing an info folder - oh and the satnav will not find the place!

Can't wait to go back
Ignore the earlier ne'ersayer out-of-date review from 2014 - this little cottage rocks our boat. If you're looking for a touring base for the East Riding of Yorkshire, Beech Cottage ticks all the boxes. A fifteen minute drive from York (hint: take the park and ride bus it's cheaper than parking in York) and the Whitby is just 40 mins away. Anyway, Beech Cottage features a really , and I mean REALLY, comfy bed in the bedroom, a mega-superpowered shower in the large bathroom as well as a bath. Ample cooking room in the kitchen/lounge area and the large entrance porch is warm in summer and somewhere to ditch rainwear the rest of the year. Oh, and the Wi-FI worked fine in all rooms. Owners are next door and very friendly, as is their resident basset hound. Now, it's a working farm so expect farm noises, smells, cows, goats, chickens. If you can't handle this really shouldn't be there (which is good as it means we can go up again without you booking it before us!)

We really enjoyed the holiday - the cottage was perfect for both us and our dog. It was comforting to know that the friendly owners lived next door but at no point did we feel imposed upon; we were left alone to enjoy the week. The walks around the local area were fantastic!

My partner and I stayed here over Easter 2015 and loved every minute. It was a lovely relaxing break that fully catered for us and our dog. The owners were laid back but helpful. They were not invasive whatsoever and left us to enjoy our stay, but always knowing they were there if we needed them. We absolutely adored the d?cor of the place, a very quaint characteristic little cottage theme. The bedroom in particular had a very cottagey feel. We particularly loved the the log burner, and so did the dog! The grounds are very well kept and are very welcoming. It is quite rural, so a car is definitely needed, but the cottage is in a perfect location for exploring York. We also did a day trip to Whitby which was perfect in the April sun. Overall, a very enjoyable stay and we have already recommended to our friends and family. Thank you.
