Oxford Castle photo, Oxford Castle

Few of the thousands of tourists who flock to Oxford each year realize that there is a castle hidden away amidst the 'dreaming spires'. The castle dates to 1071, shortly after the Norman Conquest. Its most famous moment in history came in 1147, when Queen Maud, besieged by King Stephen's army, escaped over the castle wall in the middle of winter, dressed in white clothing.
